What to consider when buying supplements

Most people do not give much thought to the purchase of their nutritional supplements, assuming that they are basically the same. However, the quality of dietary supplements varies tremendously from manufacturer to manufacturer. Many tablets can contain more fillers than of the advertised ingredient. Neither the FDA nor Health Canada routinely test supplements for their quality. The watchdog for the industry - ConsumerLab conducts independent testing of different nutritional products. For example, on November 9, 2010 they released the results of their test of ten different brands of Valerian root supplements. Only three passed their quality criteria. Five of the ten tested products did not contain the amount claimed on the label. Three products failed for contamination with lead.

Another example is even more horrifying. On March 2, 2010 the makers and sellers of fish oil supplements were sued by The Mateel Environmental Justice Foundation in California for not informing consumers that their products contained toxic levels of PCBs. The FDA did not go after these companies. It happened only because California has a law called Proposition 65, which requires putting a warning label on all products that contain toxic ingredients. The companies being sued by The Mateel Environmental justice Foundation are Omega Protein (the world’s largest producer of omega-3 fish oil) and the companies they produced fish oil for. These companies include: rite Aid, CVS, GNC, Now, Pharmavite, Solgar and Twinlab. And that’s not all. The Mateel Environmental Justice Foundation only tested 10 Omega-3 supplements that were manufactured by this company and all of them contained PCBs. The foundation plans to add more companies to this lawsuit, as more testing is being done.

That is how mass production looks like these days.

Health care professionals require that supplements they prescribe maintain a high level of quality and provide reliable results. When choosing supplements we make sure to consider the following factors:
-Manufactures who use GMP (good manufacturing standards) or the equivalent.
-Third-party analysis for independent verification of active ingredients and contaminants.
-Products that have some basis in basic science, clinical trials, published researched collection.
-Use of clean products. Free of harmful preservatives, fillers, binders, flow agents, shellacs, coloring agents, gluten and other allergens.

We have made great efforts to create a group of supplements that abides by these standards.  When you buy supplements in our online store you can be assured you are getting the best quality available today on the market. Changing brands can change your life. The human body needs therapeutic nutrients integrated in real food, not in chemical solvents or cheap fillers. Only companies who stringently screen products for heavy metals, solvents, active ingredients and dissolvability can be trusted. Professional companies commit to quality, innovation and research, conducting clinical studies for scientific proof of performance for their products.  Only with them you can expect changes in your health for the better.
